House members introduce bipartisan resolution supporting Iranian protesters

More than 100 members of Congress co-sponsored a resolution on Wednesday that condemned the Iranian regime and supported protests in the country spurred by Mahsa Amini's death in September.

The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), was introduced to the House Foreign Affairs Committee with 165 co-sponsors and supported the protesters' goal of a "democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran." The resolution also "condemned violations of human rights and state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian Government," according to an advance copy of the resolution obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Analysis: Iran executions quash protests, push dissent underground

DUBAI, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Iran's hanging of protesters -- and display of their lifeless bodies suspended from cranes -- seems to have instilled enough fear to keep people off the streets after months of anti-government unrest.

The success of the crackdown on the worst political turmoil in years is likely to reinforce a view among Iran's hardline rulers that suppression of dissent is the way to keep power.

'Joe Biden is not going to let freedom be denied in Iran,' House Democrat says

The Biden administration “will not let freedom be denied in Iran,” a senior House Democrat assured an Iranian diaspora organization at the Capitol on Thursday.

“It is not a partisan issue. We demand democracy. We stand as Democrats, we stand with the president of the United States — Joe Biden is not going to let freedom be denied in Iran,” Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) told the Organization of Iranian American Communities. “We are fighting together, we are fighting together, and we seek the freedom of all those in Iran.”

For five weeks, Iranian protesters have braved a brutal crackdown to challenge the country’s authoritarian clerical rulers, drawing the world’s attention — and the efforts of commentators in the West to explain what the demonstrators want.

The anti-government protests began in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of so-called morality police after being detained for an alleged violation of headscarf rules. But the protests have come to encompass a wide range of grievances, which are reflected in the protesters’ rallying cries.

Protests across Iran, which have entered their second month, pose a real threat to the country's ruling regime, the United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights to the Islamic Republic of Iran, recently told Newsweek.

"The level of repression and authoritarianism and brutality that is taking place in Iran cannot go on—something will have to give," Javaid Rehman, whose duties include monitoring and investigating human rights violations in Iran and reporting to the U.N. General Assembly on the human rights situation there, said. "Otherwise, there is a real risk that the people will rise and it will be beyond the control of the Iranian authorities."
